World Youth Skills Day, on July 15, is one of new UN International Days of observance. It was established by the UN General Assembly on November 11, 2014 to highlight importance of youth skill development at global level.
World Youth Skills Day seeks to generate awareness of, and discussion on the importance of technical, vocational education, training and the development of other skills relevant to local and global economy. It is hoped that the discourse will contribute to address issues surrounding unemployment and under-employment among the youth. The activities through the day will also draw attention to the critical need for marketable skills in the youth. Indian Government has mandated the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship to coordinate with industry bodies to skills day observance and industry participation.
FICCI and Ministry of Skills Development & Entrepreneurship
We, at FICCI, are extremely proud to be part of the global recognition and promotion of World Youth Skills Day. As an aggregator of Skills Development efforts, we have partnered with Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship in popularizing the observance of World Youth Skills Day 2015 through our state offices, industry members and affiliated bodies.
FICCI as a founding promoter of National Skills Development Corporation has played its role in setting up the new private sector led skills development ecosystem in India. To further the skills agenda, we are coordinating with and supporting eleven state governments in the observance of World Youth Skills Day.
…Skilling India may be the biggest challenge facing the country today. Training half a billion people by 2022 is almost certainly the most ambitious goal ever set by any country in the field of education and training. Such an ambition cannot be achieved in pockets: it will require the shared endeavor of the whole nation,” – Ranjit Barthakur, Chairman FICCI NEAC
Going forward, FICCI is committed to working with the stakeholders, especially the industry, government and academia to create sustainable and scalable skills propositions which will benefit the youth of the country from all sections of society. With this in mind, FICCI offers support and facilitation services through Policy Advocacy, Industry Intervention and International Collaboration so that the youth can acquire skills to meaningfully participate and contribute to the economy.
FICCI state offices and affiliate bodies are observing July 15 as World Youth Skills Day.
